Get Out.

Hello, I’m Haley Prestwich, and welcome to my blog!

My first post is going to be a reverse engineer of a design that I found, and thought used the principles of design well. The design I found is called, “Get Out,” hence my blog title. The site I found this design off of gave credit to  LA – Lindeman & Associates from Los Angeles, CA. This design is intended to be a poster and advertisement for a movie.

You can find this original design at this website.

Below, I am going to explain why I think this design is successful.

Contrast: This design is using a lot of contrast. At the top of the design, some of the words are bolded and some of them are not. In the middle of the page, the designer uses a predominately dark valued image to creat a stark contrast with the white and blank background. The designer also changes the size of the text. “Get out” is significantly larger than the words beneath it. All of this combined created a beautifully contrasted piece.

Repetition: The designer creates repetition in this piece by using a lot of the same font and using all caps throughout. They also bold words consistently to add to that repetition. What I really like is that they used black throughout the whole piece, even with the image.

Alignment: The designer specifically uses center alignment for this piece. You can tell that is clearly intentional. There is only one thing that is right aligned, and that is the “coming soon.”

Proximity: The designer used proximity by clumping together the names of those who came up with the concept for this movie. They also put the name of the movie and the person who wrote and directed the movie.

Color: Although the designer doesn’t use any color other than black and white, they are successful at creating very strong contrast. This is because black and white are complimentary colors, they make each other pop very well. In this piece, it helps to create a panicky feeling. The way the designer commands the black and white almost forces you to feel trapped on the poster. I think this is the feeling they wanted to invoke.

In conclusion, all of these elements contribute to the design to make it look clean, organized, and make certain information stand out. With using these principles of design, the designer created a very interesting piece of art, and you can feel the emotion in which they are trying to evoke from you. You know it is a good design if you can almost here what a designer was thinking.
